MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the School Counseling Program at Petroglyph Elementary School is to provide all students with a comprehensive counseling program that enhances student academic achievement, positive behavior, social and emotional growth, resiliency and college and career readiness. The counselor works in collaboration and partnership with teachers, administrators, parents and community to help all students develop skills, problem solve and work to their fullest potential.

The School Counseling Program at Petroglyph Elementary School envisions a future where all students possess a passion for learning, use their strengths and skills to overcome challenges, be successful life-long learners and contribute successfully to their families, their professions and the global community. 

Role of a School Counselor

Elementary School Counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self – management and social skills, who work in collaboration with school staff, administration and community / family members in the delivery of programs and activities to help student achieve success.                                                          

The counseling program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The Counseling program at Petroglyph Elementary School addresses knowledge, attitudes and skills that students need to  acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development which serves as the foundation for future success.

Direct Student Comprehensive Counseling Services include:

        1. Counseling: providing professional assistance and support to a student or small group of students during times of transition, stress, critical change or other situations impending student success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools.  However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources.  Example topics include: coping skills, friendship or family issues, grief support, etc.                                                                         

         2. Group Support: Small groups are offered as appropriate for student needs.  Example topics may include connecting with peers to enhance social skills, self-regulation, friendship skills, leadership, or groups focused on specific issues. 

         3. Instruction: I provide Classroom Guidance Lessons for every Classroom in each grade level, kinder – 5th grade, throughout the school year.

Example topics include: Child Protection, Strategies for dealing with conflict, problem solving, bully prevention, friendship skills, communication skills, leadership, preparing for middle school etc. 

Indirect Student Services include: 

Consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community and referrals.
